Urban spaces are often seen as antagonists to nature; yet, shaped by migration and change, they become habitats for many humans, animals, and plants. Through globalized trade and climate change, non-native species increasingly settle in new places. In the city of Salzburg alone, according to the “Haus der Natur,” up to seven new species are added annually to the list of so-called neophytes.
Beautiful Strangers is a metaphor for the eternal play between change and becoming at home in new environments, bringing into visual focus the nature increasingly discussed within urban public discourse.

Der urbane Raum wird oft als Antagonist zur Natur gesehen; gleichzeitig ist er, geprägt von Zuzug und Veränderung, ein Lebensraum für viele Menschen, Tiere und Pflanzen. Durch den globalisierten Warentransport und den Klimawandel siedeln sich vielerorts bisher nicht heimische Pflanzen an. Allein in der Stadt Salzburg sind das laut dem “Haus der Natur” jährlich bis zu sieben neue Arten, die sich zur Liste der sogenannten Neophyten gesellen. “beautiful strangers” ist eine Metapher auf das ewige Spiel von Veränderung und dem heimisch werden in neuen Lebensräumen, und rückt die im öffentlichen Diskurs immer mehr in den Fokus gelangende Natur mitten in der Stadt in die visuelle Aufmerksamkeit.
