“Romanticism and a romantic sensibility, the vegetative and the primal, the sensual and the poetic – these are key driving forces behind Evalie Wagner’s artistic practice. Wagner is a passionate collector, in search of a particular, singular moment that rises out of the flood of the visible — of the ephemeral, the fleeting and the transitory, which she seeks to stage and interpret through painting, photography, and installation.
Often, it is intimately personal fragments from the natural world or everyday life that serve as catalysts for her work — materials she reworks in a collage-like process. Her selections are shaped by personal affinities and sensibilities, but also by the traditions and environment of her upbringing in Upper Austria. As the artist puts it, she seeks “to infuse the everyday with a sense of mystery, and to imbue the banal with meaning. In recent years, Wagner has focused especially on the multifaceted plant cosmos of our world. Using a wide array of dried plant specimens, she creates expansive, walk-in herbariums — immersive botanical atlases that are both sensual and exuberant, fragile and ephemeral.”

“Die Romantik und das romantische Empfinden, das Vegetative und Ursprüngliche, das Sinnlichen und Poetische, sind wichtige Antriebsfedern von Evalie Wagners Schaffens. Wagner ist eine leidenschaftliche Sammlerin auf der Suche nach einem bestimmten, besonderen Moment, der sich aus der Flut des Gesehenen hervorheben lässt, nach dem Ephemeren, dem Flüchtigen und Vergänglichen, das malerisch, fotografisch und installativ inszeniert und interpretiert werden kann. Meist sind es unmittelbar persönliche Dinge aus der sie umgebenden Natur und der Alltagswelt, die Auslöser für ein Werk darstellen und collagenhaft um- und aufzuarbeiten sucht – eine von persönlichen Vorlieben gefärbte Auswahl, in der nicht zuletzt auch die Tradition und das Umfeld eine Rolle spielt, in dem sie in Oberösterreich aufgewachsen ist. Sie habe den Wunsch, so die Künstlerin, „dem Alltäglichen etwas Geheimnisvolles, dem Banales etwas Sinnhaftes entgegenzusetzen.  In jüngster Zeit setzt sich Wagner besonders mit dem so vielfältigen pflanzlichen Kosmos unser Welt auseinander, sie kreiert mit einer Vielzahl an getrockneten Pflanzen raumgreifende sowie begehbare Herbarien. Ein immersiver, beindruckender Pflanzenatlas, sinnlich und überbordend, fragil und vergänglich.”
