The exhibition jardin perdu invites the spectator into a space that combines installative clarity with poetry. Evalie Wagner arranges plants, paintings and objects into still lifes – as a constructed, transient idyll. "Le paradis perdu", the lost paradise, refers to the enigma of ideal places, which can’t be located and are ubiquitous at the same time. Like the historically intangible Gardens of Semiramis, the greened and animated space of Bildraum 01 seems harmonious, utopian and dystopian at the same time.

Like "a hanging garden that has lost its way into a space in the heart of the city", Evalie Wagner's delicate curtain of selected plants oscillates between becoming and passing away, symbolic greatness and sentiment. Plants as motifs of art and the garden in its multifaceted cultural significance inspire the artist's work. The first impulse for this work came from a fresco in Pompeii and the subsequent trip to botanical gardens and greenhouses, which originated in the Mediterranean region.

The artist’s aesthetic vocabulary includes surprising correlations and modulations – pastel references to film and literature of the 50s and 80s and serve as historical reminders, which she subtly brings to the present in a playful discussion. The exhibition is an associative-mysterious puzzle game with space, form and concept, and botany as a metaphor and means to dissolve all this in the atmosphere.


The actual element is the air between the plants and artifacts in the subtly designed space. It is those halftones that interweave the visible with the invisible.

Die Ausstellung jardin perdu lädt in einen Raum, der installative Klarheit mit Poesie verbindet. Hier arrangiert Evalie Wagner Pflanzen, Malerei und Objekte zum Stillleben als konstruiert-vergängliches Idyll. “le paradis perdu”, das verlorene Paradies, meint die rätselhafte Unverortbarkeit und Allgegenwart idealer Orte. Wie die historisch nie fassbaren Gärten der Semiramis wirkt der von der Künstlerin begrünte und belebte Bildraum 01 harmonisch, utopisch und dystopisch zugleich.

Wie „ein hängender Garten, der sich in einen Raum inmitten der Stadt verirrt hat“ schwingt Evalie Wagners zarter Vorhang ausgewählter Pflanzen zwischen Werden und Vergehen, symbolischer Größe und Sentiment. Pflanzen als Motive der Kunst und der Garten in seiner vielschichtig-kulturgeschichtlichen Bedeutung inspirieren das Werk der Künstlerin. Erste Impulse zu diesen Arbeiten kamen von einem Fresko in Pompeji sowie der darauffolgenden Reise zu botanischen Gärten und Gewächshäusern, deren Ursprung im Mittelmeerraum liegt.

Ihr ästhetisches Vokabular umfasst überraschende Korrelationen und Modulationen - pastellene Verweise zu Film und Literatur der 50er- und 80er-Jahre und Fundstücke verweisen auf Assoziationen und Referenzen, die sie in spielerischer Auseinandersetzung subtil in die Gegenwart holt. Es ist ein assoziativ-geheimnisvolles Vexierspiel mit Raum, Form und Konzept und der Botanik als Metapher und Mittel, all dies in Atmosphäre aufzulösen.

Das eigentliche Element ist die Luft zwischen den Pflanzen und Artefakten im feinsinnig gestalteten Raum. Es sind jene Halbtöne, die das Sichtbare mit dem Unsichtbaren verweben.
